Today, we’re going to show you how to properly lubricate a sticky car door lock and get it working like new.

Step 1: Choose the Right Lubricant

For this demo, we’re using WD-40 Specialist Water-Resistant Silicone Lubricant. Unlike standard WD-40, which is a penetrating oil (not ideal for long-term lock care), this silicon-based version is quick-drying, water-resistant, and won’t attract dust or dirt — making it a great option for car door locks.

🔧 Important note: Do not use regular WD-40 for lubricating locks long term. It’s great in a pinch to free up a jammed lock, but it doesn’t provide the proper protection or lubrication over time.

Step 2: Apply Lubricant to the Keyway

Insert the straw nozzle into the lock or under the dust cover (common on newer cars like Hondas) and give it a short, controlled spray. Since this lock is particularly sticky, we’re applying a little more than usual to get the lubricant deep inside the mechanism.

Step 3: Work the Key In and Out

Insert your key and gently work it in and out of the lock without turning. This helps spread the lubricant evenly inside the cylinder. Then slowly try turning the key while continuing this motion. Most locks start to loosen up within a few minutes.

If the lock is still stiff:

Reapply a small amount of lubricant
Let it sit for a few hours or overnight
Try again the next day
